Upper Thames SBH 2007

28th October 2007

Twickenham Women's squad made a flying start to the season at Upper Thames Small Boats Head on Sunday.

The squad boated three coxed fours for the 3k race looking to blow away the cobwebs ahead of the Fours Head next Saturday.

And blow away the cobwebs they did! Despite a rainy day and a strong headwind the A crew set themselves a high standard for the season by winning the S3 4+ category by 1 second. Emma Elengorn (stroke), Christine Palmer, Caroline Wagner, Gayle Farmer, Sam Grant (cox) now have to raise the bar again for a good showing in the Fours Head next weekend.

The A crew were pushed all the way by the B boat immediately behind in the draw. Gill O’Beirne (stroke), Una Green, Nic Butler, Emer McNally were driven hard by coach and cox-for-the-day Rachel Woolf and proved that the senior squad is going to be a competitive place to be this season.

The C boat – also did themselves proud under the guidance of Suz Dungey in the cox-seat. Gemma Lloyd (stroke), Mine Read, Jo Stoller and Julia Scott got the ball rolling for the newly formed ‘inter seniors’ and if this result, from a scratch crew is anything to go by they will be bringing home some silverware this season.

All in all it was a great start to the year for the women’s squad as a whole and with a senior women’s quad ready to join the mix this weekend plus two fours for the senior men the Fours Head will be an exciting day for the club! Come and watch and cheer them on!
