Schools' Head 2008

4th March 2008

On Tuesday 4th March, Grace Tolino (bow), Laura Cole, Kate Smith, Colette Abel (str) and Brooke Dunlop (cox) of the Twickenham junior squad, packed off to Chiswick to race in J16 W4+ as Twickenham’s first ever (?) entry to the Schools’ Head. After arriving at their marshalling area 15 minutes early, in a bitterly cold wind, the race start was delayed due to choppy water, and much to stern pair’s dismay, was cut from the long course to the short course.

The four rowed up to the start at Chiswick Pier, and got off to a fairly strong start. Due to a small collision with a buoy, Pangbourne College were able to make an early gain on them, and just before Hammersmith Bridge, were less than a length behind. However, the Twickenham crew is built of strong stuff and our girls pushed back. Steaming along, rating 31, they were able to push away from Pangbourne with every stroke, before going on to overtake 2 crews from the more experienced WJ 4+ category, and finishing less than a length behind another. The girls finished 3rd in their category with a time of 12:58, just five seconds off 2nd position, and 13 seconds ahead of Pangbourne.
