Men’s Development Squad
We started our Learn To Row course in mid-August and what a turn out we had with 50 potential rowers. Over a period of weeks they were taught the basics in the tank, ergo’s and of course the best bit – out on the water in eights. They then had their first ever regatta, with pots to win as well a BBQ and lots of beer – who could ask for more?
After the course was completed every one was invited to join the club for the start of the new season as novice rowers and from this we gained a squad of men and women of 35. We are nearly at full capacity on the women’s side, although we can still take more men into the squad. Over the next couple of months the squads were making great progress with visible improvements whenever they were out on the water, due entirely to the training and commitment of the squad as a whole.
We also had a months training at Molesey Boat Club due to the draw off on the river, so many thanks to Molesey for letting us use their facilities and the welcome they gave to us. This was great for the squad, as it enabled them to see another stretch of river and some famous rowing faces as well and eventually rowing all the way back home to TWRC.
The only downside this year had to be cancellation of the head races we have had so far due to river conditions. However this has made the squad even more determined that when they eventually get to race they will get their first head win – which is not far round the corner!!
Such is the strength and depth in the squad at the moment is that the local rival club who challenged us to a mini regatta pulled out once they heard what numbers we currently have – disappointing but hopefully we can race them some time soon. Come on you know who you are!!
Moving forward we will be participating in the head races till Easter and then we will plan to have a local training camp to bring us up to race speed for the regattas and lots of pots to follow!
Many thanks to all the coxes especially Jules and many others that have helped out so far, Paul for fixing all the boats, and the coaching team Corin, Katie, John and Matt.
Finally we are currently looking for men to join the Development squad, ideally you should be sporty, like socialising, winning Tankards, getting wet, parties and making new friends. If you feel like a new challenge as its not as easy as it looks then please contact beginners@twickenhamrc.net for further details.
