Not to be outdone by the 75Km Marathon Row undertaken recently by seven of Twickenham’s younger members, five of the Club’s Masters squad are going to make the same trip – but this time upstream and in gig boats rather than fine boats. All of this is in aid of the Club’s building fund.

Keith Baldwin and Ian Lilley will start the row from the Twickenham stretch on Wednesday 25th August. The second boat with Dennis Kenny, John Sewell and Bob Hurles will join them upstream with a rendezvous at Burway Rowing Club for the first overnight stop. They are planning a second overnight stop at Maidenhead with arrival at Henley scheduled for the afternoon of Friday 27th August. Mind you, if it keeps raining, as they are rowing against the stream, it might be rather late on Friday!

As with the earlier downstream Marathon Row, all the funds raised will be put towards the development of the Clubhouse. The first phase of the development programme will result in a new entrance with a lift to make the club fully accessible for the local community. The second phase will deliver much improved land training facilities, including a new rowing tank and proper accommodation for our indoor rowing machines.

We don’t have the boat booking scheme in place yet so you’ll have to show some common sense and flexibility when planning your outings, but these boats are there to be used; so look after them, don’t do anything beyond your abilities, and enjoy them.

Note ; There are a number of competent club scullers who have offered their time to help the less confident amongst us find our sculling feet. A contact list will soon be published so watch this space.

Thank you to Dominique Field and Sarita Jackson who organised the welcome home banners and party on Sunday afternoon.

A special thank you to the rowers and rowing clubs we met along the way. Particular thanks to Eton Excelsior Rowing Club, Staines Boat Club, Walton Rowing Club and Molesey Boat Club who were extremely friendly and welcoming, offered us navigations tips and let us use their facilities when we took our breaks from the marathon.

We’ve so far raised just over £900 for the building fund, however there is still plenty of time to sponsor us at www.justgiving.com/twrc-marathon-row.
