Chiswick Amateur Regatta 2008

3rd May 2008

WS4 Snatch Victory From the Jaws of Defeat

On the first sunny Saturday afternoon in May, Rachel's WS4 crew turned up at Chiswick Amateur Regatta to re-live her novice pot win 19 years on! The conditions were blustery but hot and the plentiful pleasure cruisers, meant there were some serious waves to contend with - particularly off a floating start. But Twickenham have rowed through worse on the Tideway and were ready for it.

The course was Chiswick Bridge to Kew Rail Bridge and it was befitting that they were rowing in 'George Plumtree' who sadly passed away earlier this year.

The competition was Bryanston School of Olly Cobb fame and the stakes were high - a pot but no points!

The floating start meant they were already down 50m by the time the 'go' was given with the school slightly ahead, even with the cox's best efforts to keep us aligned.

They soon made up the deficit and it was neck and neck for the entire race. Rating an average of 36 the entire 1000m, the girls crossed the line half a canvas ahead of the school to screams from our supporters and Rachel, who watched the whole race from behind her hands!

First race of the season, first pot for the girls with many more to come. This one was for you George...

Stroke - Claire Byrnes, Erica Hamnett, Becs Hurran, Gill O'Beirne. Cox - Christine Palmer

The next day all three senior women’s crews travelled to Dorney Lake for Wallingford Regatta.
