Success for Twickenham’s womens squad at first regatta of the season
6th May 2009
The Twickenham women’s first eight overcame tough opposition in the straight IM3 final against Imperial College of Medicine and Thames at Chiswick Amateur Regatta held on Saturday 2nd May.
Twickenham started on the Surrey bank and soon left Thames for dust leaving a tough tussle between themselves and the Medics.
Imperial edged ahead after the start, but the sheer strength and technical superiority of the Twickenham crew soon prevailed and Twickenham went through their opponents in the second half of the race, to win by 3/4 of a length. The boat entered with half the girls competing in their first regatta and women’s squad coach Chris McCarthy commented:
“Twickenham RC has good strength in depth in the women’s squad, and winning the Chiswick IM3 pot has set a great precedent for the rest of the season. I’m very proud of the squad who fought off a competitive Imperial Medics crew; I’m especially proud of the four rowers in the boat who lost their novice status in their first race. Newly recruited novice rowers are pushing for places in the top boat which will make for an interesting and competitive season ahead.”
